Do you remember the day 29th April,2020. An hazardous asteroid named 1998 OR2 completed it's closest countdown with our planet, and Luckily it didn't collide with the earth.
If it made collision that time, maybe I'll not able to write this blog for you, and you will not there where you are right now. Meanwhile there was a chance of extinction of Civilization. So we are safe from this asteroid right now.
Yes but not safe from other near earth asteroids. Scientists estimated that, there is 25000 near earth asteroids orbiting in the solar system. So there's a lot of chances of Asteroid threats.
Is there anything to protect our planet from asteroid's Collisions?
No :( But Surprisingly, NASA is working with a project named DART ( Dual Asteroid Redirection Test). It's a planetary defense-driven test of super technologies for preventing hazardous impacts due to asteroids collisions. DART's spacecraft is a space probe that will crash or collide with an asteroid moon for changing it's trajectory and planetary defense.
The project is now in Phase C according to NASA. The targetted asteroid is Binary near-earth asteroid 65803 Didymos B. It's around 780 meter width. And it's secondary body or it's moon named Moonlet which is around 160 meter width which is more typically at the size of asteroid that can create a significant threat to The Earth.
DART spacecraft will crash the Moonlet at a speed of approximately 6.6 km/s with the help of an onboard camera named DARCO and a sophisticated autonomous navigation software.
This collision will change the speed, motion of the Moonlet in it's orbit around the main body Didymos. DART spacecraft will use Roll Out Solar Arrays (ROSA) to provide the solar energy headed for DART'S electric propulsion system.
ROSA arrays was tested in ISS(International Space Station) in June,2017 as a part of Expedition 52. |
The DART spacecraft launch window begins in late July,2021. The expected time is 22 July,2021. It will use Falcon 9 rocket of SpaceX from Vandenberg Air force Base, California. After separation or final staging from the launch vehicle and over a year of cruise, the spacecraft will crash Didymos B moon Moonlet in late September 2022, when the Didymos system is within 11 million km of Earth.
